Marcel Wanders, the Amsterdam-based designer internationally renowned for his product design, furniture, art direction and interior designs has created an ultra-lightweight carbon balloon chair. It was unveiled at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum which after reopening is hosting its first design exhibition, Marcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk.25 years of design. The chair which weighs just 800 grams is handmade from carbon fiber and balloons filled with compressed air. The chair is given its final shape after the structure is hardened with epoxy resin. The netting of the seating piece is also made from carbon fiber.
The carbon balloon chair was conceived by the designer as a challenge to create the world’s lightest chair. The unique design of the chair brings backs the nostalgic memories of Marcel’s iconic Knotted Chair which was designed by him for Droog Design back in 1996. More than 400 objects are on display in the museum’s gallery space showcasing the collection of Marcel Wanders’ wondrous work dating from the late 1980s to the present day.
