The coronavirus pandemic have made people realize about the small and more important things they want in their lives. There are lots of people around the world who have started following their passion during this period. One such person is Steve Zwetsch, an El Sobrante, California-based artist who create cigar box guitars.
Although, he is into baking profession, he also has been creating these beautiful instruments since 2015 as a hobby. Well, now he is hoping to turn this hobby into a business for financial support and for showing his creativity as well. Since 2015, he has created 47 cigar box guitars with an average of 2-3 a year. Well, 12 of them has been created since the pandemic. Zwetsch got the inspiration of making these guitars after watching someone playing a cigar box guitar on YouTube.

Zwetsch was an aspiring guitarist at that time and due to some physical limitations in his wrist, playing a full size guitar was difficult for him. Thus, the idea of a compact cigar box guitar fascinated him even more. These type of guitars usually comes with four strings and are easier to play.
According to the artist, the upcycled cigar boxes are an ideal material for making guitars. Some of these boxes have dovetail corners and made out of cedar or mahogany. Zwetsch crafts these cigar box guitars at his home workshop in El Sobrante. It takes him about 10-15 hours to complete one guitar. Interestingly, the artist use all recycled parts to create the guitar expect the tuners and strings.

Each cigar box guitar created by the artist is unique and different. Currently, he is working on a series of rock & roll themed guitars. He has sold half of his cigar box guitar collection till date.
