How to Determine If a Restaurant Is Sustainable or Not

The events that have unfolded over the last year have drastically reduced the number of opportunities for most people to go out and enjoy a meal at a restaurant. Now that things are beginning to feel more normal, many people are going out more and more to enjoy some time outside of the house and a lovely meal out.

If you are among those getting out and about for meals more frequently, you might be hoping to start patronizing restaurants that are more sustainable in nature and have green practices in place. However, it isn’t always easy to tell just how green a restaurant is just by eating their food.

That being said, there are some key indicators that you can be on the lookout for that can help you ascertain whether a particular restaurant is sustainable. With that in mind, here are just a few of the ways in which you can determine if a restaurant is sustainable or not.

Check Out the Packaging They Use

Even though you might not be able to tell just by tasting a restaurant’s food if that particular establishment is green or not, you can often tell by packaging that your food arrives in. When the restaurant you are evaluating isn’t a typical sit-down restaurant and presents their food in disposable containers, the type of packaging can give you a good idea.

For instance, if you receive your food in a plastic container or a Styrofoam one, you can pretty much safely assume that the restaurant as a whole isn’t run with sustainability as a top priority. While you want the recyclable food packaging that restaurants use to be of a good quality, you still want to see the label indicating that it is, in fact, recyclable or made from recycled materials.

Read Through the Menu

For the most part, restaurants that use locally sourced, sustainably grown ingredients for their dishes are proud to feature this fact. Therefore, if you would like to know if the food that you are eating comes from such a source, then look no further than the menu in your hands.

If this information isn’ton a restaurant’s menu, take a look around the place. You might find it featured elsewhere in the space, such as on a chalkboard or poster of some sort. When all else fails, you can always ask a member of staff where their ingredients are from.

Look at the Table Cloth

Restaurants that are more sustainable understand that going through thousands of paper napkins and table cloths throughout the year is likely not the most eco-friendly way to go. Such restaurants will use cloth napkins and table cloths instead.

Even though these items need to be washed thoroughly, restaurants that are focused on staying green can opt to use an eco-friendly laundry service that will, in turn, have their own methods of keeping their practices on the more sustainable and eco-friendly side of things.
